Avoid intervertebral disc problems: Tips for everyday working life

22. December 2022
André Heyden

In search of food or a safe place to camp, our ancestors walked up to 30 kilometres every day. So sitting for hours on end is anything but natural for humans. And yet we do it - in offices, public authorities and control centres. This is often comfortable, but in the long term it causes us health problems. Our intervertebral discs, in particular, give us a hard time. We can do a lot ourselves to alleviate the harmful effects of sitting on our bodies.

Back pain: the price of a civilised life

Do you have back pain today? Then you're in good company. Because 61.3 per cent of Germans have had problems with their back in the last twelve months. And it's not just older people who are affected. Even 20 per cent of people under 40 have had to have their intervertebral discs treated. In total, doctors' surgeries and hospitals record 180,000 herniated discs per year. But why are the intervertebral discs in particular so susceptible?

Intervertebral discs protect the spine

The intervertebral discs are like the "shock absorbers" of the spine. They maintain its flexibility and ensure that the individual vertebrae do not rub against each other. In order for the intervertebral discs to fulfil their important function, the core of the disc must be filled with a gelatinous disc fluid. This consists of water and various vital substances and steadily decreases over the years. Incidentally, this is one reason why we lose height as we get older.

Why do we have problems with our intervertebral discs?

The flexibility of the spine developed at a time when our ancestors moved around a lot every day and, above all, in many different ways. They climbed trees, hunted on foot or squatted to collect nuts, roots and berries. These intensive movements optimally supplied the intervertebral discs with fluid. Sitting for hours on end, on the other hand, leads to the supply of fluids coming to a standstill and the intervertebral discs are no longer protected by a buffer of water and vital substances. This then leads to typical symptoms such as pain in the lower back, cramps and even signs of paralysis.

Intervertebral disc problems: What are the causes?

To prevent this from happening in the first place, you should take our ancestors as an example. You don't have to slay a sabre-toothed tiger. Jogging, climbing stairs and targeted strength training are usually enough to keep your intervertebral discs flexible and healthy. But you can do even more - even in the office. Because the way you sit can also make a significant contribution to preventing problems with your intervertebral discs in the first place.

Sitting correctly prevents problems with the intervertebral disc

Do you work in an office, a control centre or at an airport terminal? Then you know how important a good office chair is. Especially if you have to concentrate constantly and continuously deliver top performance, you must not be distracted by back pain or disc problems. Professional 24-hour chairs are a tried and tested solution. This is because they enable so-called "active sitting", in which you regularly change your sitting position. This stimulates the circulation, trains the muscles and optimally supplies both the brain and the intervertebral discs with nutrients. 24-hour chairs from StolComfort are therefore being used in more and more companies, authorities and organisations that want to enable their employees to work in a focused and healthy way.

24-hour chairs: (not) a chair for everyone

Another advantage of our 24-hour chairs, heavy-duty chairs and executive chairs is their flexibility. This is because the individual models can be customised to the needs and requirements of the person in question. This is important, because a 1.90 metre tall colleague who weighs around 150 kilograms has different ergonomic requirements than a trainee with a body weight of 60 kilograms. If everyone uses the same office chair model, back problems, headaches and other effects on health are inevitable. So don't choose off-the-peg chairs. Do it right - with 24-hour chairs from StolComfort.
