Step by step towards a circular economy: new solutions for greater sustainability at Svenstol

11. August 2025
creative feat

Sustainability is not a one-off project – it is a long-term process that involves many small and large decisions. As a manufacturer of high-quality 24/7 and office chairs, we are constantly working to conserve resources, reduce emissions and design products for the future.

Two current developments are prime examples of how we are approaching this goal:

Planned further development: armrests with replaceable pads

Die Armauflagen unserer Stühle gehören zu den am stärksten beanspruchten Bauteilen. Gerade bei täglicher, intensiver Nutzung entstehen hier mit der Zeit AbnutzuThe armrests on our chairs are among the most heavily used components. With daily, intensive use, wear and tear inevitably occurs over time. Until now, this has often meant replacing the entire armrest – a costly and resource-intensive process.

We are currently working on a new design for our Svenstol armrest, which will allow users to easily replace the PU armrest themselves – without tools or a service appointment.
The goal:

  • Less material consumption,
  • less waste,
  • and fewer CO₂ emissions, e.g. by reducing the number of service technician visits.

The introduction of this solution is planned for the near future and is part of our efforts to make repairs easier and more sustainable.

Upholstery parts made from recycled raw materials: Less CO₂, same quality

At the same time, we are currently testing upholstery parts made from 41% recycled raw materials. The production of these components reduces CO₂ emissions by around 27% compared to conventional production.

The raw materials used come from a so-called mass balance process. This involves replacing fossil-based materials with recycled or bio-based materials – the balance is calculated across the entire production process. The aim is to make recycling economically and industrially viable – without compromising on function or quality.

To ensure that this is the case, we are currently conducting a long-term test. This is designed to ensure that the recycled-based upholstery components offer the same properties and durability as components made from completely new raw materials.

Taking responsibility further: certified environmental management

Both measures are part of our ISO 14001-certified environmental management system. The standard specifies requirements for systematic environmental management and supports companies in identifying and minimising environmental impacts in all relevant areas.

Our goals in this regard are to

  • Use resources more efficiently
  • Design products that are more durable and easier to repair
  • Actively shaping the transition to a circular economy

Conclusion:

Sustainability is not achieved through individual headlines, but through many small decisions in product design, material selection and resource management.

With the planned modular armrest design and the use of recycled upholstery components, we are taking concrete steps to reduce our environmental impact – while ensuring that the quality and functionality of our chairs remain at the high level you have come to expect.
